How To Choose Kids Books About Horses

by Phyllis Long

Your child is an equestrian in the making. And that's why kids books about horses are something that you're seriously looking into. That means your new job is to help your child get all the info on horses that they can handle. Whether your child can't stop talking about the horse they saw on a local farm trip, or they already ride, take a look at what you need to know about picking out the perfect storybooks on the subject.

Age Appropriateness

A 25-chapter book about horses isn't the right choice for your 4-year-old. Even though it might have photos, pictures or plenty of interesting facts, your preschooler won't be able to sit through the story. Books that are written for grade schoolers, middle schoolers or teens and adults will have the vocabulary that a younger child may find confusing as well.

On the other end of the age spectrum, an older child isn't likely to enjoy the picture-heavy storybooks that entertain toddlers and preschoolers. Your older child, tween or teen needs more content and information to gain their interest.

Kinds of Content

There isn't just one type of kids storybook about horses. There are nonfiction books that provide plenty of facts. And there are fictional tales that feature imaginative stories about horses that speak and people who ride off into magical lands.

The type of content that you choose depends on your child. Keep in mind, some authors and publishers create specialized content that takes what seems like complex information (such as horse physiology or other aspects of all things equine) and brings it to a young child's level.

Likewise, some authors pen stories that are fantastical, magical and filled with imagination — but they're for older children or tweens, and not "little kids."

Favorite Characters

Does your child have a favorite character? Many children do. If your child's favorite character is featured in a kids' book about horses, you're in luck. If not, you don't have to worry.

Your child may talk non-stop about a cartoon character or someone who is on a favorite TV show/movie. But that doesn't mean they don't have room for a new favorite friend. Pick a story that appeals to your child's interests, introduce them to a new horse (or human) character and help them to broaden their horizons.

Kids books about horses offer opportunities on top of opportunities for your child to learn, grow and gain new information. From your child's age to the types of books they enjoy reading, you can help your little learner to pick the reading material that is just right.
