New to the Kitchen? How to Learn About Food Safety

by Phyllis Long

Food safety is something that so many people don't take the time to learn about. When you go to a restaurant, you know that the staff has been trained on how to work with food properly, how it needs to be stored, and how to prepare it safely. Unfortunately, not everyone cooking at home knows that food must be stored at a certain temperature or that it only has a certain shelf-life. Here, you'll find a few tips that will help you create a kitchen with good food safety practices to prevent anyone from getting sick from the food that you're preparing.

Get Educated

The best thing for anyone with no experience in the kitchen is a good book about food safety. These books are loaded with all sorts of information that will help you keep your kitchen safe. Not only will you learn about food prep, but you'll learn about how to safely store the food that you've prepared.

Make sure that you read the book—even if you just thumb through at first; it will give you a better idea of what's expected of you in the kitchen.

Get Organized

The easiest way to keep your kitchen clean and sanitized is to keep everything organized, and the best way to organize a kitchen is to get rid of the stuff that you don't use. Go through each cabinet and drawer and pull out all of the stuff that you've never used.

Check the dates on all of the food as you go through the cabinets. Oftentimes, spices and canned goods sit on the shelves for months, sometimes years. When you allow these old foods to sit in your kitchen, you're increasing the likelihood of accidentally putting them in something that you're cooking.

Ask for Help

Do you have a loved one that knows his or her way around the kitchen? If so, don't be shy—ask for a few tips. Chances are, you can create some fun memories working in the kitchen with your loved one as he or she teaches you from the mistakes that they have been made over the years, as well as their successes. There is no better teacher than those with experience.

Don't put off learning about food safety—it is easier to wrap your head around than you think. However, if you fail to practice, you'll end up with some memories that you're not so excited about.
